Safeguarding: statement of intent
The safety and wellbeing of all children is our highest priority. Safe recruitment of trainee teachers is the first step in safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children in education. The King Edward's Consortium (KEC) takes very seriously its role as a 'gatekeeper' to the teaching profession.
Our aims in recruitment are:
- to deter, reject or identify people who might abuse children or are otherwise unsuited to working with them;
- To ensure that the best possible trainee teachers are recruited on the basis of their merits, abilities and suitability to train to teach;
- to ensure that all applicants for initial teacher training are considered equally and consistently. Moreover, that no applicant is treated unfairly on any grounds including race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin, religion, gender, marital status, sexual orientation, medical condition (including people living with HIV or AIDS), disability or age;
- To ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, recommendations and guidance including:
Keeping Children Safe in Education (Department for Education 2025)
Working together to safeguard children (HM Government 2023)
Prevent Duty Guidance for England and Wales (HM Government 2023)
Initial Teacher Training Criteria and Accompanying Advice (Department for Education 2025)
Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act (HM Government 2006)
Any guidance or code of practice published by the Disclosure and Barring Service
- to ensure that the KEC meets its commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people by carrying out all the necessary pre-course (also known as pre-employment) checks.
